Thank the immigrants, please

I’ve been living in the US for almost six years, and I love being here. I’ve chosen this place, where I feel at home and relatively safe. Every time I feel very comfortable and “forget” I am not from here, something happens to remind me… every little simple thing is harder if you are an immigrant and the renewal of my driver’s license was one more evidence of how the system is designed to make us uncomfortable and, using the legal language, aliens.

Years ago, when I first applied for my license, I had to go to the RMV four times to prove I was here legally. By the second attempt…
